Abstract

The present investigations embody data on hybridization and chromosomal analysis of two different strains of Aedes (Stegomyia) aegypti, i.e., from Pondicherry (PD) and Pune (PN). Mating compatibilities tested by making reciprocal crosses, backcrosses and F2's did not reveal any reproductive barriers between these two strains; per cent egg hatches and sex-ratios were normal in all crosses. The somatic karyotypes of two strains were identical comprising three homomorphic pairs (2n = 6) of chromosomes. Meiotic analysis revealed considerable asynapsis at metaphase-Istages within strains and interstrain hybrids which indicated the existence offloating inversion polymorphism. The mean chiasmata frequency of PD and PN strains was 3.35±0.126 and 3.78±0.096 respectively and those of interstrain hybrids ranged from 333±0.091 to 3.38±-0.123. From these data, the two strains of Ae. aegypti appeared genetically very similar and thus represent conspecific populations of the taxon.
