The perception paradigm shift of waste as “waste” to “waste as a resource”; translates waste from being disposed at landfills, to been utilized for economic and environmental development. Considering the massive volume of the waste, type of waste, quantity, and main occupation of the indigenous people in Delta State; there is need for the utilization of waste in promoting sustainable agricultural practices such as the production of staking poles/materials from waste plastics/polythene for the cultivation of creeping tuberous plants and vegetables such as Yam (Dioscorea spp.), Tomatoes (Lycopersicon esculentum), Beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) and Pumpkin (Telferia occidentalis); and organic fertilizers from organic waste. This will reduce the overall volume of waste generated, improve environmental sanitation and health, environmental protection, create job opportunities and promote sustainable development in Delta State.
