Introduction: Maintaining the scalp hygiene is very important because it is an area where moisture and organic matter from the glands stay for long even without getting exposed to sunlight directly. It provides a suitable ground for the microbes to propagate and persist. Periodic cleansing is very important to maintain its health. In a changing world, people always sought for a faster remedy for everything. Shampoo comes handy for them, but always causes adverse effects. As the naturally available homemade antidandruff agents are less toxic and don't cause adverse effects. Sapindus mukorossi has a good antimicrobial, antioxidant and antiinflammatory effect. So it is used in this study. This study is done to demonstrate antifungal activity of Sapindus mukurossi compared with anti dandruff products.
Materials and Methods: In this study we used Sapindus mukorossi (soap nut) and is antimicrobial activity. We made Sapindus mukorossi seed extract and it was taken in cuvettes, to this, a suspension of 10μl of Candida albicans was added and allowed to react for 5 mins. After 5 mins exposure a subculture is made on Sabouraud Dextrose Agar plate and incubated for 24 hours. Similarly shampoo samples were taken in cuvettes and Candida strain was exposed for 5 mins and sub cultured onto Sabouraud Dextrose Agar plate and incubated. After the incubation the total CFU were noted and tabulated.
Results and Discussion: Selenium disulphide has more antifungal effect with Candida albicans than Sapindus mukorossi. Climbazole has a mean count of 120 and percentage reduction is about 94.16%. For zinc pyrithione the mean count is about 368 which has a 85.12% reduction of 14.8 %. Sapindus mukorossi has a mean of 1178 which has a percentage reduction of nearly 52.5%.selenium di sulphate has a percentage reduction of 99.7%.
Conclusion: Selenium sulphate has a good activity against Candida albicans. But Sapindus mukorossi showed 52.5% reduction against Candida which is considered to be significant.
