Abstract

The removal efficiency of either clay (montmorillonite) or micelle-clay complex towards Cr(VI) in
aqueous solutions was investigated. The micelle-clay complex was prepared from the adsorption of
critical micelle concentration of octadecyltrimethylammonium ions onto clay. Batch experiments were
conducted to investigate the effects of pH, contact time and adsorbent dosage on the removal
efficiency of Cr(VI) from aqueous solutions. The experimental results were found to fit Langmuir
adsorption isotherm in a significant manner. Columns charged with a mixture of micelle-clay complex
and sand were used to assess the Cr(VI) removal efficiency under continuous flow at different pH
values. The findings demonstrated that the micelle-clay complex used in this study was capable of
removing Cr(VI) from aqueous solutions without any prior acidification of the sample. In additions,
they revealed that the removal effectiveness of the complex was about 100% when optimal conditions
for both batch and continuous flow techniques were used.Mohannad Qurie1,2
