This work reveals the possibility of reaching a higher Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER) for Room Air
Conditioners (RACs) that fulfills the energy efficiency national and international standards. This study
postulates several design alternatives for enhancing the performance and efficiency of the RAC in
comparison with a baseline RAC unit manufactured by local manufactures in the Kingdom of Saudi
Arabia (KSA). These design alternatives include the number of condenser and evaporator rows,
compressor types, fins density, frontal area, and refrigerant types. The experimental data obtained is
through testing the units according to standard ASHRAE-16. This study accounts the results of a set
of measurements performed on a modified RAC and compares them with the tested baseline RAC
unit at similar conditions. The experimental results indicate the effectiveness of increasing the number
of condenser rows in comparison with other design options considered for achieving higher EER for
RACs.
