Abstract

Colon drug targeting that was utilizing oral route is proven to be one of the most preferred, acceptable, satisfactory and patient compliances factors. Due to this the colon targeting has gained much attention and popularity among researchers of pharmaceutical field for last few decades. This colon region has been explored as a potential area of targeting for few drug candidates for both local and systemic therapeutic needs for effective management of local born colonic diseases. By able of that colon targeted drug delivery systems, it is now possible to reduces those side effect of drugs and numerous drawbacks associated with it. Globally many researches are ongoing in pharmaceutical research and development sector for explorations of newer drugs especially protein and peptides drugs. Few newer advanced strategies had been prescribed and developed for more effective targeting of drug directly into the vicinity of colon region. Among few strategies available, that microbial triggered and pH dependent is more comparatively acceptable and popular one. In context with colon specific targeting colonic microflora had vital role for fate and degradations of matrix polymer(s) and thereby drug releases in controlled order. This present article highlighted those physico-chemical parameters, factors affecting drug absorption, novel drug targeting strategies, utilization of matrix polymers for dosage form designing and development etc. in detail for possible updates on the current issues.
