Abstract

The prevalence of cardiovascular disease is widely attributed to hypertension (HTN). Diterpenoids are just one example of the many plant-based compounds that have been studied as potential antihypertensive medicines in recent years. Vasorelaxant effect and inhibition of vascular contractility are shown by a number of naturally occurring diterpenes, including forskolin and sativoside. Because of their hypotensive effects, diterpenes have been studied for possible applications in the treatment of hypertension in humans. Several of the naturally occurring diterpenes and the anti-hypertensive effect they have are discussed in this chapter. Also importance of diterpenes in the treatment of hypertension is discussed.
